🚇 Guttman as a Stop Along the Journey: Career Exploration with The City Tutors & CUNY EDGE
📍 “Thriving in Today’s Job Market – What Employers Want & How to Stand Out”
đź“… March 19, 2025 | Stella and Charles Guttman Community College
On a Wednesday afternoon in March, students filed into a room at Guttman Community College. Others joined virtually from across the CUNY system—Baruch, BMCC, John Jay, and more. By 4:15 PM, both the room and Zoom breakout spaces were full.
This wasn’t a lecture. It was a career exploration experience built around honest conversations, real questions, and the power of connection.
🗺️ A Key Stop in the Mentorship Subway System
Guttman, located in Midtown, serves a 95% BIPOC, majority first-gen student body. With the support of CUNY EDGE, the campus became a hub for mentorship and possibility.
This was The City Tutors’ first in-person event with a CUNY campus since becoming an independent nonprofit, and our first hybrid event with a CUNY partner.
CUNY EDGE Director Tiffany Muñoz set the tone:
“Never be scared to walk into a room full of successful people—be open to learn from them. Success comes from experiences. Stay open-minded and always stay teachable.”
đź’¬ Mentorship in Action
Learners engaged directly with professionals across media, tech, HR, healthcare, biotech, and talent acquisition through in-person speed networking and virtual breakout conversations. No resumes, no pressure—just real dialogue.
Students came from across the CUNY system, including those in programs like SEEK, ASAP, and CUNY EDGE—representing fields such as computer science, finance, psychology, design, healthcare, and business.
🎙️ Reflections from the room:
“Even amid uncertainty, it’s powerful to remember we’re part of a society that fosters innovation. This event reshaped how I view my career path.” – Dolores, a Per Scholas graduate
“Meeting multiple mentors helped me break down next steps. I left with insight—and new friends.” – Akash, Baruch student
👥 Mentors Were Impacted Too

“Talking in person helps you connect more deeply. The students were engaged, prepared, and full of great questions.” – Kerry Ann King, HR & workforce professional
✨ The In-Person Difference

At The City Tutors, we’re building a mentorship subway system that connects learners across NYC to opportunity. Guttman was a key stop—and a powerful reminder that when we meet students where they are, doors open.
